Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park - Bismarck ND
The Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park is a beautiful state park located near Bismarck North Dakota. The park is located on the former site of a Native American village of the Mandan tribe. In the late 18th century, smallpox hit the village and it was abandoned. Later the U.S. Army established a military post at the site. George Custer, who famously participated in the Battle of the Little Bighorn, commanded this military post for some time and lived here with his wife.
Today, the recreated versions of the Indian village, the military fort and Custer’s house are included within the park. The On-A-Slant Indian Village today includes 6 Earthlodges reconstructed in the original style of the Mandan tribe. The scenic backdrop of these lodges and the peek they offer into Indian culture are a truly amazing experience for visitors. You can take a guided tour through the village and get more information about the local Indian culture and history from the guide. While you are out and about please reach out to us for your carpet cleaning needs. Check us out here. Much of the original military post also exists today, although most of it has been reconstructed. Today it includes most of the original structures including the barracks, stables, commissary, granary and a theater. Each of these structures offers you a unique experience. You can take a tour through these structures or check them out at your own pace. If you want more than a lesson in history, you can check out the vast outdoor expanses of the park. These are dotted with plenty of opportunities to explore and have fun. If you are into camping and one for daring, you can have a lifetime experience by living in one of the rental teepees made in the style of Cheyenne Indians. Camping cabins are also available, equipped with all the modern amenities. In all, the park is home to around 17 primitive campsites and 82 modern campsites. On-foot trails loop all over the park and offer plenty of venues to enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the rolling hills of North Dakota on foot. A number of trails exist allowing ample opportunities for biking, horse riding and hiking. |
